Vocabulary: Using Context Clues

These three vocabulary worksheets can help middle and high school students find the confidence to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by using contextual clues.

Each unfamiliar word is employed in two or three consecutive sentences, with each sentence progressively giving more specific clues. By covering up the page to only expose one sentence at a time and making guesses at the meaning of the unfamiliar word, students improve their mastery of utilizing context clues to define unknown words. This process can help students build vocabulary skills by generalizing a willingness and subsequent ability to define meaning of unfamiliar lexicon from context clues in unique situations, such as academic presentations.
