Written Elaboration: Adding Meaning - Simplification and Elaboration Worksheets

My students love this exercise! It tasks them with identifying the core meaning of overly complicated sentences, before creating semantic complexity by adding adjectives, adverbs, times, places, specific nouns, and descriptive verbs.

Written Elaboration: Adding Meaning
Simplification and Elaboration Worksheets

Middle and high school students can use this material to improve the descriptiveness and specificity in their writing while learning that more words do not always equate to more meaning.

This writing skill activity (complete with an answer key and therapy notes) is often met with amusement from students, while still clearly demonstrating the necessary information. Beginning with an unnecessarily long and detailed example sentence, this activity points out the underlying and more concise meaning. The subsequent example is a similar sentence but containing more meaning and more specific descriptions of the elements of the sentence. For the exercise, students are asked to simplify other long, amusingly convoluted sentences before rolling dice to determine which parts of speech (including adjectives, adverbs, more descriptive verbs, more specific nouns, places, and times) they need to add to their now-simplified sentences.
